The Alpujarras region to the North of Salobrena consists mainly of valleys which descend at right angles from the tops of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the North, to the Sierras Almijara, which separate it from the Mediterranean in the south. The region is one of outstanding natural beauty, and it is sometimes referred to as "The Spanish Switzerland". Owing to the warm southerly climate and the reliable supply of water for irrigation from the rivers running off the Sierra Nevada, the valleys of the western Alpujarras are among the most fertile in Spain, though the steep aspect of the terrain means that they can only be cultivated in small fields. They contain a great abundance of fruit trees, especially olives, oranges, lemons, figs and almonds, not forgetting grape vines of course. The small, white-washed villages clinging to the slopes of the Alpujarras are an absolute delight to visit and photograph, and are quite close by.
