Situated between Almunecar and Motril (click here to see exactly where we are in Salobrena), and about an hour's drive from Malaga airport, Salobrena still maintains its Spanish roots and traditions. Spain's most popular tourist attraction, the Alhambra in Granada, is less than forty-five minutes away, and the ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada, home to the 1996 FIS World Championships, are just over an hour away. In the winter months, skiing in the morning and relaxing around the heated pool in the afternoon is a realistic option when you book this family villa for a Salobrena villa holiday rental. This three bedroom, two bathroom villa is situated near the top of Monte de los Almendros overlooking the old town of Salobrena, the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, and the Mediterranean. The views are absolutely stunning, and peace and quiet are a certainty owing to the secluded position of the villa, and its situation at the end of a cul-de-sac. The ideal location for luxury holidays and Spain rentals.
Inside there is a large well-equipped modern kitchen (brand new in March 2009) with "soft-close" drawers and cupboards, with all the fixtures and fittings that you would expect, including Silestone worktops, self-cleaning pyrolitic electric oven, electric induction hob, plate warmer, large fridge/freezer, wine cooler, coffee maker, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, iron and ironing board, and all the necessary utensils, crockery, pots and pans etc. There is also a special tap dispensing filtered drinking water, so there is no need to transport large, heavy bottles of drinking water from the supermarket to the villa. There are patio doors leading to a balcony with steps down to the pool and barbeque area. At the end of the kitchen there is a large picture window overlooking the heated pool.
In the large lounge/diner, there is a dining table with seating for six together with ample comfortable sofas and chairs. There is satellite TV with all the free to air British Sky channels, a DVD player and a CD player (bring your own favourites). The lounge has access to the breakfast terrace via double doors, and the main window gives views to Salobrena, the Castle and the Mediterranean. There is a very efficient wood-burning fire in the lounge for Winter visitors in case Salobrena does not live up to its reputation as the warmest place on the Costa del Sol in the Winter. For Winter lets (October to April) we provide thermostatically controlled electric radiators and timer switches for all bedrooms and living rooms, and during this period only, electricity consumed will be charged at cost. For all other lets, electricity costs are included in the rental price. Logs are supplied free of charge throughout the Winter for use in the fire in the Lounge/Dining room.
Broadband WiFi access is provided at no extra charge. A telephone is also provided and local calls (to other 958 prefix numbers, such as local restaurants) are free. All other calls will be charged at cost and the total deducted from your security deposit before it is returned to you. Our managing agent will call Telefonica on the day of your departure to find out what calls have been made. If you prefer, the telephone handset may be removed. This may an option for parents with teenage children as it is particularly expensive to call the UK from Spain!
The double-aspect master bedroom faces in the same direction as the lounge/diner, and so has similar spectacular views over Salobrena and the Mediterranean, but also includes views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It overlooks the breakfast terrace and has its own en-suite shower room (retiled and completely refitted in March 2009). This bedroom also benefits from an air-conditioning unit. All bedrooms have their own hair-dryer, and include all linens and towels. There is a weekly bed-linen and towel change for stays of more than one week, and there is free use of the washing machine. Weekly maid service is available locally at a small extra charge. Pool towels are provided, but are not to be taken outside the villa grounds. The other two bedrooms share the family bathroom (retiled and completely refitted in 2009) and have views overlooking the Mediterranean garden to the Sierra Nevada mountains, and as they face predominantly North-East do not require air-conditioning. A Sony Playstation 2 is located in the third bedroom. (Please bring your own favourite software games).
There is ample off-road secure parking space for two cars and extra room, if required, in the adjacent area at the end of the cul-de-sac just outside the property.
* The heated pool is surrounded by lawn and garden, is totally secluded, and there are chairs and loungers for six people. For all rentals, the heated pool has an oil-fired heating system with a thermal cover. The oil used will be charged at cost, and if used sensibly and in conjunction with the cover, should not exceed 70 pounds per week, even in the Winter. It is most unlikely that the pool heater will be required for lets from June to September.
There is an Outdoor Chef barbeque with all the necessary equipment. The breakfast terrace has a table and chairs and has absolutely wonderful views over Salobrena to the beach and the Mediterranean. The gardener and pool cleaner may appear at some time during your stay, but will be as unobtrusive as possible and may well be agreeable to setting a more convenient time with you. (It may cost you a beer or two though!). Any Additional Charges for electricity or oil will be deducted from your security deposit before it is returned to you. Please refer to our "Terms of Use" page for a more detailed explanation.
Please: In an effort to keep the villa in perfect condition for all our guests we ask that you don't bring pets, and refrain completely from smoking inside the villa.
Salobrena is located in the Spanish region of Andalucia on the Costa Tropical. It is often described as one of the Costa del Sol's best kept secrets, and as such is largely untouched by mass tourism. It is therefore an ideal holiday destination for the visitor who needs a Spanish vacation holiday rental or Spain holiday rentals away from the tourist crowds of the Costa del Sol further to the West. Salobrena is the ideal location for a relaxing cheap holiday, good beaches, a wealth of leisure activities and a taste of the real Spain. There is nothing quite like a winter getaway to the warmest part of Southern Spain for holiday rentals. So, if you're looking for 2, 3 , 4 or 5 bedroom villas to rent in Spain, you've found the ideal place for Spain holiday rentals.
The Alpujarras region to the North of Salobrena consists mainly of valleys which descend at right angles from the tops of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the North, to the Sierras Almijara, which separate it from the Mediterranean in the south. The region is one of outstanding natural beauty, and it is sometimes referred to as "The Spanish Switzerland". Owing to the warm southerly climate and the reliable supply of water for irrigation from the rivers running off the Sierra Nevada, the valleys of the western Alpujarras are among the most fertile in Spain, though the steep aspect of the terrain means that they can only be cultivated in small fields. They contain a great abundance of fruit trees, especially olives, oranges, lemons, figs and almonds, not forgetting grape vines of course. The small, white-washed villages clinging to the slopes of the Alpujarras are an absolute delight to visit and photograph, and are quite close by. Do not miss a visit to the Alpujarras when you stay at any of the stunning Spanish holiday villas on Salobrena Holidays.
Salobrena, about six miles east of Almunecar and 3 miles west of Motril, is a typical Andalucian whitewashed village clinging to the side of what is known locally as Gran Penon, but which is in fact a massive rocky outcrop clearly visible from the main coast road. At the top of Gran Penon is the ruined 10th Century Moorish castle once the winter palace of the Kings of the Alhambra. Around and below the castle the typically Spanish white-washed village reaches down to the surrounding sugar cane fields and beaches. The village retains most of its heritage and history, is one of the few villages in Spain that can claim to be the birthplace of “tapas“, and most of the local bars still serve these traditional accompaniments to the local beer or wine. The local areas of Albaycin, de la Loma, el Brocal and la Fuente still retain their charm, maintaining the original village’s layout of impossibly narrow winding roads, paths, passages, and arches. There are many colourful festivals throughout the year when the village comes alive with Fiestas, masks, carnival lights, music and dancing. Below the town lies the long sandy beach that in the summer months attracts visitors from all over the world. To the east of the village, on the way to Motril is the 18 hole Los Moriscos golf course, close enough to the Mediterranean to have a cooling breeze at all times of the year. This is not an area like those further to the west. It is a quieter village with none of the excesses of Marbella and Puerto Banus and their like. It is a place to relax and enjoy Spain holiday rentals with the fabulous scenery, the excellent local restaurants and bars, and revel in the old Spain. The beautiful villas, rented from owners directly, with stunning views that make up the Monte de los Almendros and Alfamar urbanisations, make a popular choice for villa rentals for family holidays and vacations, and are particularly popular with Northern Europeans as retirement properties or as holiday rentals.
The history of Salobrena dates back to 4000 BC when, so history scholars claim, a party of wandering shepherds settled in the area to live their lives caring for their livestock. They left many possessions and carvings in the caves in the rocky cliffs that overlook Salobrena. The area was once a rocky island with just a little sparse vegetation sprouting from it. The island was surrounded on one side by the Mediterranean and on the other side by the Guadalfeo River. Over the course of time, the river changed its course and the island was joined to the mainland by the dried-up river bed.
Eventually, the Phoenicians settled in the area creating salt mines and factories for curing fish, but then the Romans took Salobrena and most of the rest of Andalucia, and they, in turn were supplanted by the Moors. The Moors built the castle that sits at the top of the town of Salobrena and reigned supreme until the Christians arrived and took over the town and the surrounding area. The Christians held the area until the nineteenth century until the French gained control for a very short period before the Christians regained it. This time the sugarcane fields were planted, and this caused the economy of Salobrena to recover, a recovery which has now formed the Salobrena of today.
